Guide

How to choose an ecommerce platform.

Choosing an ecommerce platform is one of the most important decisions for an Indian business going online. This guide gives you a practical framework — 12 criteria to evaluate, with questions to ask and trade-offs to consider. It is useful whether or not you choose BharatGo.

Before you compare

Start with your business, not the platform

Before comparing platforms, understand your own business:

  • What do you sell? Physical products, digital products, or both? Do you need variants (sizes, colours)?
  • How do you sell? Online only, offline only, or both? Do you need POS billing alongside an online store?
  • Who are your customers? Do they pay with UPI? Do they order on WhatsApp or Instagram? Are they retail or wholesale buyers?
  • What is your budget? How much can you spend monthly on platform, payments and shipping?
  • Do you need GST invoicing? If you are a registered business, you need invoices with GSTIN and HSN/SAC codes.
  • Do you ship across India? If yes, you need courier integration and delivery rate configuration.

Once you know what you need, evaluate each platform against the criteria below.

The framework

12 criteria for evaluating an ecommerce platform

Storefront and setup

How easy is it to set up your store? Does it offer mobile-optimised themes, custom domains, and a storefront that loads quickly? Can you get live in minutes or does it require developer help?

Catalogue and inventory

Can you add unlimited products with variants (sizes, colours)? Is inventory tracked automatically? Can you bulk import via CSV? Does stock update when a sale happens online or at the counter?

Payments

Does the platform support UPI, cards, net banking and wallets? Does money go directly to your bank account? Can you connect your own payment gateway? Are there per-transaction fees on top of the subscription?

Shipping and delivery

Is there integration with Indian courier services like Shiprocket? Can you configure delivery rates (fixed, distance-based, weight-slab)? Is Pay on Delivery supported? Can customers track their orders?

GST and billing

Can the platform generate GST-compliant invoices with your GSTIN, tax rates and HSN/SAC codes? If you sell offline too, is there a POS that handles both retail and wholesale billing with GST?

Online and offline selling

If you have a physical store, does the platform offer a POS that shares inventory with the online store? Can you bill walk-in customers and online orders from the same dashboard? Does stock stay in sync?

Customer management

Does the platform store customer data, order history and contact information? Can you see who your loyal customers are? Is there loyalty points or customer wallet functionality?

Marketing and analytics

Can you create discount coupons and run promotions? Is abandoned-cart recovery available? Does the dashboard show sales, revenue, best-selling products and customer insights?

SEO

Can you configure page titles, meta descriptions and URL slugs? Is structured data automatically generated? Does the platform produce a sitemap? Can you optimise individual product pages for search?

Integrations and plugins

Does the platform support Google Analytics, Meta Pixel and other integrations? Is there a plugin marketplace for adding functionality? Can you connect messaging services like MSG91?

Support

Is support included in the plan? Is there WhatsApp support? What are the support hours? Is onboarding included? Do you get priority support on higher plans?

Pricing structure

What is the monthly or annual cost? Are there per-order commissions or transaction fees? Do you pay extra for payments, shipping or plugins? Is there a free trial without requiring a credit card?

A practical approach

How to use this framework

1

List your must-haves

From the 12 criteria above, identify which are non-negotiable for your business. For a GST-registered retailer, GST invoicing and POS+online sync may be must-haves. For a creator, digital delivery may be essential.

2

Score each platform

For each criterion, note whether the platform fully supports it, partially supports it, or does not support it. Be honest — a platform that requires a third-party app for a core function is not the same as one that includes it.

3

Check the total cost

Subscription price is only one part. Add payment gateway fees, shipping costs, plugin costs and any per-order commissions. A cheaper subscription with high transaction fees may cost more overall.

4

Test with a free trial

Most platforms offer a trial. Use it. Try setting up a product, configuring payments, and placing a test order. How does the dashboard feel? Is it intuitive or confusing?

5

Think about growth

Will this platform still work if you double your sales? If you add a physical store? If you start selling wholesale? Switching platforms later is disruptive, so choose one that can scale with you.

What goes wrong

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Choosing on price alone — a cheap platform without GST invoicing or inventory sync costs more in workarounds
  • Ignoring mobile experience — most Indian shoppers buy on phones, so a slow or broken mobile checkout loses sales
  • Overlooking payment fees — some platforms charge transaction fees on top of payment gateway charges
  • Not testing the dashboard — a platform that looks great on the marketing page may be confusing to actually use
  • Forgetting about offline selling — if you have or plan a physical store, not having POS+online sync creates double work
  • Assuming all features are included — many platforms charge extra for plugins, themes or payment gateway integration

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Not necessarily. Some platforms offer free plans or trials. However, free plans often come with limitations — transaction fees, limited products, no custom domain or no payment gateway options. Evaluate whether the limitations fit your business needs or whether a paid plan would serve you better.
